VAIL GOLF CLUB OPENS 18 HOLES, OFFERING SOME OF THE BEST RATES IN THE MOUNTAINS The Vail Golf Club announced yesterday afternoon (6-3) that 18 holes are now open for play, while it continues to offer some of the best rates in the mountains. Golfers currently can enjoy up to 18 holes for $35 to walk the course or $54 including cart. Those playing nine holes or after 3:30 p.m. can play for $20 to walk or $32 including cart. Due to the recent rainy weather and golf course irrigation work taking place, golfers may experience temporary greens and course reroutes on some holes, or an occasional hole closure or half-hole closure throughout the summer. A temporary green will be located on hole three for up to two weeks as crews install sod on the new tee and allow it to grow. During the irrigation renovation, golfers can expect a minimum of 17 holes available for play at all times. Additionally, golfers who use carts are being asked to remain on the cart paths to allow greens to rejuvenate and protect them for the duration of the golf season. For more information or to book tee times, call the Vail Golf Club at 479-2260 or click here. For information on Happy Valley Grill, located within the Vail Golf Club, call 479-7321.

GOLF TIP FROM THE VAIL GOLF CLUB PROFESSIONALS This week's tip is from Vail Golf Club Professional Chris Johnson How to Read Your Shot Have you ever hit a shot that looks like it is heading straight for the pin, only to have it slice 30 yards right before it lands? Being able to read your shots and understand why this happens is helpful in understanding your golf swing. There are only 3 directions that the ball can start once it is hit: left, right or straight. The ball doesn't care if its being struck by Tiger Woods or a 36 handicap, it will start in one of the three directions every time you swing. These directions are determined by the club's path, if your swing path is to the right then the ball would start to the right. This means that your club is swinging from inside the target line to outside the target line. For most of us the fun or frustration does not stop with just these initial three directions. We all put spin on the ball, which will make the ball curve when it is in the air. The reason for this curve is the clubface. If the clubface is aimed right at impact then the ball will spin to the right or slice once it is air born. Likewise, if the club was aimed left this would cause the ball to spin left or hook. This is what causes a shot that appears to being heading straight to your target to suddenly veer off line. Our grip on the club is one of the determining factors in where the clubface points during the swing. If you consider the three initial directions the ball can start and then add the spin, you will get a total of 9 different ways the ball can move. Next time you are on the range try and watch your ball flight and read what your shot is doing and why. We hope these ideas help you to understand a bit more about the golf swing. For a better understanding of putting, we suggest a lesson with one of our PGA Professionals at the Vail Golf Club. For details, click here or book a lesson by calling 479-2260.

NEW PUMP HOUSE NEARLY COMPLETE The golf club's new pump house is nearly complete after only seven days of construction. The installation of the pump house began last week and is constructed of a set of prefabricated, environmentally sound, modular components. The pump house, which is 100 percent wood product, was constructed by a company called Pure Wood Solutions and is an example of how future projects could be built in Vail. The building system requires no artificial components such as chemicals, glues, insulation or solvents. For details, contact VRD Building Maintenance Director Scott O'Connell at 477-5264.
