Unless there is a last minute change by the Federal government, effective Friday, April 3rd, 2009 all employers are required to verify the identity and work authorization of all new hires using a new Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9).
The new I-9 form is available on the USCIS WEBSITE. The new forms include a revision date of 02/02/2009. The USCIS has also released a revised edition of its I-9 handbook for employers. CLICK HERE to obtain the new handbook.
Employers will notice major changes to I-9 form and the employment eligibility verification process. The most significant change being that all documentation offered for verification purposes must be unexpired at the time it is presented. Previously a new hire could present an expired passport to fulfill the verification requirements. This marks a complete change from the existing I-9 procedures.
