Region’s top junior golfers competed for points
Eagle Vail Golf Club, the Vail Valley’s only public mountain course, hosted the 2009 Colorado Junior Golf Association’s Tom Whitehead Memorial Junior Tournament on June 24.  Sarah Moore of Greenwood Village, Colorado, finished first with a three stroke lead over Shannon Lubar of Littleton in the Girls’ 14-18 year olds. Benjamin Krueger, of Colorado Springs posted an impressive -1 to bring the Boys’ Championship flight to its knees. He was closely followed by Michael Lee of Greeley +1, Jake Jacobs of Thornton +2, Sam Schweitzer of Greenwood Village +2 and Samuel Rock from Superior, Colorado also with +2.

“We love to host Junior Golf Events, it’s really rewarding” said Ben Welsh, Eagle Vail’s PGA Head Golf Professional. “It is really fun to watch the amazing swings of some of these young golfers and to see in them the future of golf,” commented Welsh.
The Colorado Junior Golf Association (CJGA) is the youth tournament program of the Colorado Golf Association. Established in 1984, the CJGA is a non-profit organization that conducts, promotes and supports junior golf activities in Colorado for boys and girls, ages 18 and under. Eagle Vail Golf Club is one of the fantastic stops on this years CJGA schedule. Young golfers accumulate points along the way, competing for the overall Colorado Junior Championship honors.

Tom Whitehead enjoyed the Vail Valley and all the outdoor activities that it offers.  He lost his life tragically in a horseback riding accident but his memory lives on through the Tom Whitehead Memorial Golf Tournament.

These junior programs are possible because the Colorado Junior Golf Association receives support annually from membership dues, fund-raising activities, and donations from parents, individuals and businesses.

WEEKLY TIP FROM THE VAIL GOLF CLUB PROFESSIONALS

This week's tip is from Vail Golf Club Professional Jeanne Sutherland

Rotation
Recently, I saw an episode of Playing Lessons From the Pros on The Golf Channel with Padraig Harrington. There was a great segment in the show when Padraig related what he thinks about when he works on his swing. His answer was "rotation." From the top of his back swing, everything is rotating until the end of his swing. This is a very important concept for most of the golfers I see on the lesson tee. Here is why:

If you took lessons from a buddy when you learned to play, your buddy might have told you to keep your head down or to stay behind the ball. Both of these cues often cause golfers to quit rotating through impact and their momentum becomes stuck and usually travels up. Watch the pros and you will find that as they get into impact, their chests are turning to the target. There is no hesitation, there is no staying behind the ball and there is no "up" in there swing. There is simply rotation. A better cue from your buddy would be to keep your eye on the ball, which allows you to see the club into the ball at impact, but also allows your head to continue to rotate following impact. As for staying behind the ball, the great old players used to talk of "covering" the ball with your chest. That is what they felt as they struck the ball. It is impossible for anyone to cover the ball when behind it at impact. You must be moving through it. So even in the good old days, the best players didn't stay behind the ball but instead were over it at impact.

When you go out to hit balls, try a few simple drills to help you feel rotation. First, swing the club as you would a baseball bat and feel how your arms follow your chest as you turn. The next drill is to stand a few inches from a wall. Without a club, make a mock swing. Can you get your right butt cheek to touch the wall on the backswing and your left butt cheek to touch it on the through swing? If so, you have done a great job of rotating through the shot. If your left butt cheek gets further from the wall, you probably went up through your shot instead of rotating. Body and arm rotation are keys to power, consistency and balance. It is also a great way to avoid injury because your momentum is used to hit the ball and released instead of becoming jammed and being absorbed into your shoulders or hips.

We hope these ideas help you to understand a bit more about the golf swing. For a better understanding of your personal swing, we suggest a lesson with one of our PGA Professionals at the Vail Golf Club. For details, click here

OUTDOOR GOLF SWING ANALYSIS LESSONS AVAILABLE Book a lesson and utilize the golf club's golf swing analysis program. Set up outside, the swing analysis program utilizes multiple cameras, plus sound and light to capture a golfer's swing in real-time and slow motion, and then records it digitally. Swing analysis lessons are available by appointment only and can be booked by calling 479-2260.

Couples increasingly find resort the perfect matrimonial destination

North America’s premiere residential mountain community is

hosting more weddings this year than ever before.

Heading into wedding season, June through September, when a large

majority of American weddings take place, The Lodge & Spa at

Cordillera is seeing triple the number of bookings over past years.

And The Club at Cordillera, with three private clubhouses available

for weddings, is booked to capacity.

“We’re slammed for the entire year,” says Kirsten Goodman, sales and

catering manager for The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera, listing the

resort’s picturesque mountain locations, renowned luxury and service

and profound sense of privacy as several reasons for success. “And

this place, with the inspiring views, really sells itself. Couples

feel at Cordillera, the sky’s the limit.”

Nestled high above the Vail Valley within more than 7,000 acres of

Colorado High Country ranch land, Cordillera is North America’s premiere residential mountain community, the epitome of casual mountain living with a twist of refinement.

Recently named “No.1 hotel for service and cuisine in Colorado” by

Conde Nast Traveler, The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera is an ideal wedding

destination with a variety of ceremony and reception venues, including

a charming Cordillera Gazebo, a beautifully landscaped lawn and a

private pool area — all with stunning views of the Vail Valley and the

snowcapped peaks of the Gore and Sawatch ranges.

The Lodge offers the amenities of a AAA Four Diamond hotel — an award-

winning restaurant, a 20,000-square-foot Spa and an elegant ballroom

that can seat up to 200 people, for example — in a relatively intimate, mountain chateau setting. With just 56 rooms, the entire hotel, or a wing of rooms, can be booked by families seeking the utmost in privacy.

The Club at Cordillera, meanwhile, with ceremony and reception venues

at Timber Hearth Grille, The Summit clubhouse and The Trailhead

clubhouse, offers couples with up to 400 guests and family members the

experience of enjoying a wedding as a part of a special club.

And with only one wedding per day booked at any of Cordillera’s

venues, add the luxury of flexibility on wedding day.

“While anyone can book these facilities, each one of them has the feel

of a private club,” says Kirstin Shepherd, catering and sales manager

for The Club at Cordillera, adding about half of all weddings at the

Club involve member families.

“The venue at Cordillera was a dream come true for a wedding location

because of the view, the flowers, the friendly staff at Timber

Hearth,” adds Barb Sexton, the mother of Cora Wheeler, a recent

Cordillera bride. “We especially appreciated that everyone was

enthused about our celebration, which made our experience the best.”

Both the Lodge and the Club offer extensive hospitality options,

including the menus and staffs of the award-winning Mirador and Timber

Hearth Grille restaurants, horse-drawn carriage or sleigh rides by

Bearcat Stables, world-class recreational opportunities and luxurious

bridal suites. Each can be custom tailored to make any wedding a

unique, unforgettable event.

“It all happened with such casual elegance, and Cordillera made it

easy,” says Anita Grantham of Phoenix, a visitor to the resort

community who scheduled her recent wedding to future husband JB at

Cordillera after attending a friend’s wedding there. “We felt at home.

They make you feel like you own the place.”

Talented artists, stunning venues promise jazz paradise in cool Rocky Mountains

The Vail Jazz Festival returns with over 29 live jazz concerts in and around Vail this summer.  The Festival culminates with the annual Vail Jazz Party, at 24 hour celebration of jazz, which this Labor Day weekend returns to its former home at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort in Lionshead.
“If you like traditional jazz, swing, Latin jazz, or the American Songbook, you won’t be disappointed this summer,” said Howard Stone, chairman and artistic director for the Vail Jazz Foundation.  “We’ve mixed it up with a variety of jazz styles, and our venues bring together great jazz talent with spectacular settings.” continued Stone.

JAZZ AT THE MARKET, JUNE 28 – AUGUST 30
The festival begins on June 28 with the first of ten Jazz at the Vail Farmers’ Market concerts, Sundays at the Vail Jazz Festival stage from noon to 3:30pm, on Meadow Drive near Annie’s. Talent includes local favorites like Tony Gulizia Trio, Justin Allison Trio, Summit Jazz Consort, the Mile High Chapter Choir, and Kathy Morrow.

ICEF & WASHINGTON PREP JAZZ & MARCHING BAND, JULY 3 & 4
The Inner City Educational Foundation (ICEF) and Washington Prep Jazz & Marching Band once again returns to Vail to join in the July 4th celebrations. The Band is comprised of students from South Central Los Angeles charter schools who have earned their way to Vail.  With their unique blend of traditional marching, jazz and hip hop, this 100 member band will perform at Mountain Plaza on July 3, and on July 4th will participate in the parade and perform in Vail Square at 1pm.
“The Jazz & Marching Band helps us launch the festival with a big splash” said Mia Vlaar, executive director of the Vail Jazz Foundation.  “As the summer continues, we add more venues and greater variety of performances.”

CURTIS STIGERS BENEFIT, JULY 20
Multi platinum selling vocalist Curtis Stigers will perform a benefit concert for the Vail Jazz Foundation on July 20 at the Arrabelle.  Stigers is a singer, saxophonist, and songwriter whose musical selection is a distinctive blend of rock, soul and jazz.  His crooning, emotional interpretations allow the poetry of the lyrics to come through.   Tickets are available for $150 by calling 970.479.6146.

JAZZ AT VAIL SQUARE IN LIONSHEAD, AUGUST 6 – SEPTEMBER 3
Jazz at Vail Square returns to Lionshead on August 6 with the first of five free shows in an intimate tented venue outside the Arrabelle Hotel.  Confirmed artists include:
Thursday, August 6:  Niki Haris
Singer, songwriter and dancer Niki Haris brings her talented quartet to the Vail Square stage on August 6.  Niki, who is the daughter of Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Gene Harris, has enjoyed a fabulous solo career since her years as a backup singer for Madonna. Haris performed in January at the Obama inauguration, and has recorded with Ray Charles, Santana, Luther Vandross, the Righteous Brothers, Anita Baker, Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston and Madonna.

Thursday, August 13:  Hot Tomatoes Swing Band and Swing Dancing
One of the best swing bands west of the Mississippi, the Hot Tomatoes delights fans with authentic re-creations of music by the greats of the swing era, including Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Harry James.  Completing the big band experience are award-winning swing dancers Tiffiny Wine and Kenny Nelson, whose high energy, toe tapping swing performance will not be complete until they invite the ‘not so shy’ to join them on the dance floor for live dance instruction!

Thursday, August 20:   Magos Herrera Quartet
A dazzling, accomplished singer-songwriter known for her beguiling rhythmic scatting inflected with soulful Latin-Andalusian phrasings, Magos Herrera is a jazz singer extraordinaire.  Magos’ signature sound elegantly blends her classic jazz styling with Mexican, Cuban and Brazilian melodies. Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English, Magos is a favorite in Latin America, and her repertoire is filled with the yearning romance, intimacy and enchantment of Mexican and Cuban songs and boleros, and sultry, languid samba-bossa nova beats.

Thursday, August 27:  Doug Wamble
Acoustic guitarist, singer and composer Doug Wamble is known for his unique blend of jazz, gospel and blues.  Wamble, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, grew up on a steady diet of blues, gospel, country and R&B, bluegrass, rock and jazz – and his unique musical style reflects this diversity.  Wamble is joined by pianist Roy Dunlap, bassist Jeff Hanley and drummer Peter Miles.   The quartet has performed at venues including London Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Tanglewood and Monterey Jazz Festival.

Thursday, September 3:  Clayton Brothers Quintet and VJF All-Stars
Lead by Grammy winner and bassist John Clayton, this highly acclaimed jazz group includes saxophonist Jeff Clayton, pianist Bill Cunliffe, Terell Stafford on trumpet, and Lewis Nash on drums.  The Quintet also serves as educators for the Vail Jazz Workshop, an intensive ten day clinic for 12 of the finest high school-aged jazz musicians in the country.  Their unique learning experience culminates with their performance with the Clayton Brothers Quintet in Vail Square on September 3.

VAIL JAZZ PARTY: LABOR DAY WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 3 – 7
The Vail Jazz Party will welcome back some 2008 crowd pleasers: tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, who played with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra at the Ford Amphitheater in 2008.  Also back by popular demand: Benny Green, a one-of-a-kind pianist, alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, and B-3 organist Tony Monaco.  Colorado’s own Dave Corbus will be playing blues guitar, while groups Ann Hampton Callaway and her trio and the Jeff Hamilton Trio return to once again wow concert goers with their range and finesse.    The Clayton Brothers Quintet will be a major force at the Jazz Party, as will the Brian Lynch Quintet.  Pianist Bill Cunliffe will present a multi media salute to trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard.
The Vail Jazz Party offers something for everyone – including one special show that’s not to be missed: the Mile High Chapter Choir will share their soulful gospel sound outside in the Vail Square tent in Lionshead on Sunday, September 6, where they will be followed by an afternoon session of jammin’ jazz featuring a variety of Jazz Party musicians.

FATHER'S DAY TIP FROM THE VAIL GOLF CLUB PROFESSIONALS
This week's tip is from Vail Golf Club Professional Jeanne Sutherland

Add Distance to Your Shot
This week, we will attempt to make dads everywhere happier by adding distance to their golf game. Have you ever wanted to really rip a drive and end up hitting it shorter than you would have using your normal swing?  If so, try this approach the next time you want to get an extra five to ten yards. Instead of gripping the club harder, hang on a bit softer. Instead of swinging harder, swing smoother. Instead of being faster, slow down your back swing. Most of our instincts to gain power are exactly the opposite of what we need to hit it farther.

Here are some characteristics of many long hitters. They generally hang on to the club firmly enough to control the club during the swing, but not with white knuckles. The back swing and transition are generally smooth and a bit slower to allow for a big shoulder turn and more distance. They swing through the ball to a balanced finish position facing their target.

Next time you go out to hit a bucket of balls, try those three things and see if you can pick up an extra five yards. For details, click here or book a lesson by calling 479-2260.

GOLF SWING ANALYSIS LESSONS AVAILABLE AT VAIL GOLF CLUB
Golfers are now able to book a lesson and utilize the golf club's golf swing analysis program. The swing analysis program is set up adjacent to the driving range and utilizes multiple cameras, plus sound and light to capture a golfer's swing in real-time and slow motion, and then records it digitally. According to Vail Golf Club Head Professional Jeanne Sutherland, swing analysis offers golfers an opportunity to study their swing plane, setup, motion and impact position. It also affords the opportunity to compare with proven professionals, as well as track progress against their own past swing mechanics. Swing analysis lessons are available by appointment only and can be booked by calling 479-2260.

Join the fun in Avon on July 3th
The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa has once again signed on as title sponsor for the 24th anniversary of Salute to the USA, which will be held in Harry A. Nottingham Park on Friday, July 3rd, 2009.   The annual Independence Day celebration will begin at 5:00 p.m. with live music, food vendors, and a beer garden.  A great big FREE Family Zone will offer families carnival games, inflatable jumping toys, face painting, clowns and a special children’s instrument petting zoo presented by BRAVO!   The Family Zone is sponsored by Calvary Chapel and will open at 5:30 p.m. and continue until the fireworks light the sky at 9:45 p.m.

The Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa, the gracious title sponsor of this pyrotechnic extravaganza, is the newest “green” resort development on the Eagle River in Avon with a direct gondola connection to Beaver Creek.  The sponsor sees Salute’s patriotic message as a perfect fit for their marketing platform.

The live concert opens with an Avon-based band, Bluezilla on stage at 6:00 p.m. followed by KZYR live radio until 8:00 p.m.  Next up to rock the house is 70’s and 80’s icon Foghat; Foghat began their career in 1971 as a bunch of rather unpretentious young Brits with an affection for American blues and '50s rock 'n' roll. By the middle of the decade, they had evolved into a major touring and recording act, playing a pumped-up brand of boogie-rock to arena-size audiences. Their looks grew flashier, their sound fattened and filled out, yet the roots-rock core of the band remained ever-present under the surface.* We are sure to enjoy classics such as “Slow Ride”, “Foul for the City”, and “I Just Want to Make Love to You”.

The evening concludes with the Colorado Rockies largest fireworks display.  The spectacular display will kick off at 9:45 p.m. and will be choreographed to a musical score simulcast on local radio.  Come on out and enjoy this Independence Day celebration with your family at Harry A. Nottingham Park.

Please leave dogs, alcohol, grills and personal fireworks at home.  Blankets and warm evening attire are recommended.

This event is made possible with support from: Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa, KZYR, Vail Daily, Western Enterprises, Bachelor Gulch Village Association, Beaver Liquors, Stan Bernstein & Associates, Christie Lodge, Comfort Inn, Eagle County, FirstBank of Avon, Slifer, Smith, & Frampton and TV8.

Check it out on Saturday, June 20
America's highest botanical garden is gearing up for the summer season with an afternoon filled with flowers, art and fun.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, in conjunction with Vail's Art in Public Places program, the Vail Nature Center and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, officially observes the longest day of the year during its annual Summer Solstice Celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday (June 20).

"We invite the community to help us celebrate summer solstice, the official start of summer," says Ann Kurronen, the Gardens' executive director. "In collaborating with several other nonprofit organizations, together we'll offer lots of activities for children and families that help us appreciate the changing of the seasons."

Near The Schoolhouse giftshop and museum at Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, in Vail's Ford Park, artists invited by Art in Public Places will be displaying their work as part of the 10th annual Summer of Sculpture.

This year's featured work, on loan from the Denver Art Museum, is by world-renowned artist Bernar Venet. The sculpture, entitled "228.5° Arc x 5," is a 7-foot-high, rolled-steel, curved shape that appears to defy gravity in its ingenious tilted balance.

For a second time, the Gardens and the AIPP also are hosting an en plein air, or outdoor, painting competition, during which judges will select three paintings of Venet's sculpture to be sold at Vail International Gallery.

"The artists all choose different viewpoints," says AIPP Coordinator Leslie Fordham. "Come look over their shoulders, see their points of view, watch paintings being created from beginning to end. It's a great way to see the whole artistic process."

For the kids, activities include a Painted Lady butterfly launch, dancing around a maypole, Bravo's Instrument Petting Zoo, croquet games and guided tours of the Gardens. The Vail Nature Center, meanwhile, is hosting "The Wild Side of Ford Park," including more kids activities, as well as educational nature trail walks along the banks of Gore Creek.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, at 8,250 feet above sea level in Vail's Ford Park, is the highest botanical garden in the United States, and perhaps the world, providing free access to an estimated 100,000 visitors annually. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for which operations and programs are funded entirely through the generosity of donors, its mission is to inspire passion for plants in high-altitude communities through beautification, conservation, education and research programs.

Recognized as the foremost authority on high-altitude plants in natural and cultivated landscapes in the Rocky Mountains, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens not only contributes staff and expertise essential to conservation efforts throughout the region, it also provides an environment for rare, exotic and imperiled alpine wildflowers and plants. It also plays an important role in encouraging summertime flower displays throughout the Vail Valley at both private homes and businesses.

For more information about the painting competition during this year's Summer Solstice Celebration, visit www.ArtInVail.com. For a complete events schedule or more information about the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, call 970-476-0103 or visit www.bettyfordalpinegardens.org.

GOLF TIP FROM THE VAIL GOLF CLUB PROFESSIONALS

This week's tip is from Vail Golf Club Professional Jeanne Sutherland

First Shot of the Day

Many people dread the first shot of the day. On the first tee, there seems to be added pressure, because there are often others watching or there is simply the fear of the unknown. You might wonder how you are going to hit today or how people you are paired with will judge you by your first swing. As a golf professional, I am not immune to this nervousness. At The Old Course in St. Andrews, I remember shaking like a leaf on the first tee. I was so excited to be there and also had a big crowd of caddies, golfers and spectators around the tee. Here are some strategies that help me to ignore distractions and might help you, too.

If you have the opportunity to hit some balls prior to the round, end your warm up session by pretending to be on the first tee. Picture what the hole looks like, go through your routine, get set over the ball and hit the shot. If it isn't what you want, start over. Get yourself ready through role playing.  This settles the nerves and gets you mentally into your own course routine. Jack Nicklaus reportedly did this prior to each tournament round he played. Another strategy when you get to the first tee is to have a pre-shot routine that you do each time you hit a ball or at least a tee shot. It needs to have the following qualities:  rhythm, alignment, visualization, balance and focus. That sounds like a lot, but if you practice your routine, it will actually shorten your time over the ball. Here is a typical routine:

  • Stand behind the ball and visualize the flight.

  • Step up close to the ball and take a smooth, rhythmic, practice swing.

  • Set the club behind the ball aimed at the point you visualized the ball flying toward.

  • Feel your balance and waggle the club to stay loose in your arms and hands.

  • Swing and hit.

All of this should take between 30 and 45 seconds. No one wants to play with someone who takes forever to hit a shot. Having this routine will give you something to focus on. It has the amazing ability to clear your mind and send your focus where it needs to be instead of the distractions that come on the first tee.

Good luck on the first tee and on every tee.  Learn a great routine that is unique to you and helps you focus on demand. For a better understanding of routines and preparing for the first hit, we suggest a lesson with one of our PGA Professionals at the Vail Golf Club. For details, click here or book a lesson by calling 479-2260.

VAIL GOLF CLUB PRO SHOP

The Vail Golf Club Pro Shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. During the month of June, buy a pair of golf shoes and receive any Vail logo shirt at half-price. The shop also has a wide selection of clothing, accessories and equipment to help you take your game to the next level. Call 479-2260 for details.

Event scheduled for September 6, 2009

The IronKids' mission is to inspire and motivate youth through the sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. The national event series, targeting children ages six to 15-years-old, will offer an interactive weekend experience for the entire family.

The goal of the IronKids Series will be to host approximately 300-400 participants per event between the ages of six and 15 years old. Children will compete in age-appropriate distances with an emphasis on fitness, fun and safety.

WTC acquired IronKids from the Sara Lee Corporation who had owned the event series since 1985. IronKids' Races have seen more than 40,000 participants in its history. IronKids has introduced some of the sport's greats with past participants including seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong and U.S. Olympians, Hunter Kemper and Laura Bennett.

Michelle Payette, who joined WTC in 2008, will use her experience in event management to oversee the IronKids branded event series. Based in Phuket, Thailand, for nine years, Payette served as Race Manager for Ironman Malaysia and for the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. Most recently, Payette was managing events for Tourism Whistler (B.C. Canada) on behalf of the resort community.

The IronKids mission is to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle.  IronKids provides families with a weekend event experience that is educational, interactive and fun.

To ensure IronKids leaves a footprint throughout the U.S., IronKids has developed a ‘Legacy Program’ that will focus on educating students on the importance of nutrition and physical activity, encouraging children to adopt the IronKids lifestyle.

Altitude TV to film from a helicopter on Wednesday, June 10
If you are playing at the Eagle Vail Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon, June 10th, don’t be alarmed if the whomp-whomp from helicopter rotors interrupts your backswing. Relax and call for a mulligan. It will just be the helicopter of Altitude TV flying overhead, filming the beauty of the Eagle Vail Golf Club.  The film shoot is planned for some time after 2:00pm.
“Everyone who has ever played Eagle Vail knows how beautiful it is and how well groomed it is,” said Ben Welsh, PGA Head Golf Professional.  “Now we get to showcase its incredible attributes throughout the Rocky Mountain region with a half hour show on Golf at Altitude,” exclaimed Welsh.

Altitude Sports & Entertainment is the most watched regional sports network in the Rockies. Altitude was created by Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche owner Stan Kroenke to give area sports fans the most comprehensive regional sports network in the Rockies and will be a great advertising partner for the Eagle Vail Golf Club.

The half hour shows will air from late June through Labor Day, highlighting the beauty, value and convenience of Eagle Vail Golf Club.  Welsh will provide tips about successfully playing the course, which boasts a blend of holes on the valley floor and on undulating mountain terrain, punctuated by creeks and the Eagle River.  It is regarded as one of the most beautiful golf experiences in the Vail Valley, and it is central to all amenities and activities, including the public swimming pool, tennis courts and parks in the Eagle Vail neighborhood.

Other Eagle Vail Golf Activities
Eagle Vail’s Willow Creek is open and ready for play
For added family fun and value, Eagle Vail’s Willow Creek opened on Memorial Day weekend. The longest hole is 120 yards, and with rounds at $17/adults and $12 /juniors, Willow Creek is a great public golf value for families, beginners, and for those with sights on perfecting their short game.

League Play is in Full Swing
The Eagle Vail Golf Club Men’s and Ladies Leagues both began Tuesday, May 26. Ladies League tee times are scheduled in the mornings and Men’s League tee times start in the afternoon.  If you’re visiting the Vail Valley, it’s a great way to get in a game of golf and meet some of the local flavor.

18 holes open, some of the best rates in the mountains

VAIL GOLF CLUB OPENS 18 HOLES, OFFERING SOME OF THE BEST RATES IN THE MOUNTAINS
The Vail Golf Club announced yesterday afternoon (6-3) that 18 holes are now open for play, while it continues to offer some of the best rates in the mountains. Golfers currently can enjoy up to 18 holes for $35 to walk the course or $54 including cart. Those playing nine holes or after 3:30 p.m. can play for $20 to walk or $32 including cart.

Due to the recent rainy weather and golf course irrigation work taking place, golfers may experience temporary greens and course reroutes on some holes, or an occasional hole closure or half-hole closure throughout the summer. A temporary green will be located on hole three for up to two weeks as crews install sod on the new tee and allow it to grow. During the irrigation renovation, golfers can expect a minimum of 17 holes available for play at all times.

Additionally, golfers who use carts are being asked to remain on the cart paths to allow greens to rejuvenate and protect them for the duration of the golf season.

For more information or to book tee times, call the Vail Golf Club at 479-2260 or click here. For information on Happy Valley Grill, located within the Vail Golf Club, call 479-7321.

SEASON PASS SALES UNDERWAY, PLAY FOR AS LITTLE AS $22.50 PER 9 HOLE ROUND

Season pass sales are underway with amazing deals throughout the season. Purchase the 20, 9 Hole Round Pass and play for just $22.50 per nine hole round. Or, purchase the 10 Round Pass and play nine or 18 holes for just $40. Gold and Silver Passes are also available and cost $1,600 and $800 for Vail Residents, or Eagle County residents can purchase a Silver Pass for $1,100.

The golf club also is offering a new Young Adult Pass for ages 18 to 23 years old. The pass is $300 for Vail residents, or $350 for non-Vail residents and carries the same restrictions as the Silver Pass.
Vail and Eagle Vail Golf Club will also be offering a limited number of transferable ten punch cards at an incredible value of only $575. The pass will include five rounds at each course with no restricted days, which allows the card holder greater flexibility to experience more than one course. Passes may be purchased in either golf shop.

Click here or call 970-479-2260 for details.

IRRIGATION RENOVATION CONTINUES, MAINLINE INSTALLATION MOVING FORWARD

Recent rainy weather slowed work on the irrigation renovation taking place, but crews worked hard to stay on schedule. Work takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and a half day on Saturday at the Vail Golf Club. No work takes place on Sundays.

Currently, the mainline has been installed on holes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 18 and adjacent to the driving range. The mainline is anticipated to be installed holes 4 and 5 by Friday and then moves toward hole 6, followed by 11, 12 and 13. Golfers should expect a temporary tee on hole 5 Friday and Saturday, June 5-6.
Renovation of three tee box is nearly complete. Current work on tee box 3 includes planting trees and sod installation. The new tee box features three times larger tee space size over the previous areas, plus amazing views of the Gore Mountain Range. Weather permitting, the tee box should be open for play within the next 10 to 14 days.

During the renovation, golfers can expect a minimum of 17 to 18 holes available for play.  For details, contact Vail Golf Club Superintendent Steve Sarro at 479-2262 or view details on his blog by clicking here.

GOLF TIP FROM THE VAIL GOLF CLUB PROFESSIONALS
This week's tip is from Vail Golf Club Professional Chris Johnson

How to Read Your Shot
Have you ever hit a shot that looks like it is heading straight for the pin, only to have it slice 30 yards right before it lands? Being able to read your shots and understand why this happens is helpful in understanding your golf swing.

There are only 3 directions that the ball can start once it is hit: left, right or straight. The ball doesn't care if its being struck by Tiger Woods or a 36 handicap, it will start in one of the three directions every time you swing. These directions are determined by the club's path, if your swing path is to the right then the ball would start to the right. This means that your club is swinging from inside the target line to outside the target line. For most of us the fun or frustration does not stop with just these initial three directions.

We all put spin on the ball, which will make the ball curve when it is in the air. The reason for this curve is the clubface. If the clubface is aimed right at impact then the ball will spin to the right or slice once it is air born. Likewise, if the club was aimed left this would cause the ball to spin left or hook. This is what causes a shot that appears to being heading straight to your target to suddenly veer off line. Our grip on the club is one of the determining factors in where the clubface points during the swing.

If you consider the three initial directions the ball can start and then add the spin, you will get a total of 9 different ways the ball can move. Next time you are on the range try and watch your ball flight and read what your shot is doing and why.
We hope these ideas help you to understand a bit more about the golf swing. For a better understanding of putting, we suggest a lesson with one of our PGA Professionals at the Vail Golf Club.

NEW PUMP HOUSE NEARLY COMPLETE
The golf club's new pump house is nearly complete after only seven days of construction. The installation of the pump house began last week and is constructed of a set of prefabricated, environmentally sound, modular components. The pump house, which is 100 percent wood product, was constructed by a company called Pure Wood Solutions and is an example of how future projects could be built in Vail. The building system requires no artificial components such as chemicals, glues, insulation or solvents. For details, contact VRD Building Maintenance Director Scott O'Connell at 477-5264.

ABOUT THE VAIL GOLF CLUB

Military personnel, students & boosters comprise teams

On Friday, June 5th, Eagle Vail Golf Club and Battle Mountain Touchdown Club will host military personnel from Ft. Carson and supporters of the Battle Mountain High School Football program, in a unique fundraising golf tourney to benefit the BMHS football team. Sponsorships are still needed and a few playing foursomes are still available for this tournament, now in its fifth successful year. The event raised about $20,000 last year which helped the BMHS team purchase new uniforms and equipment, and help cover the cost of travel.

Pat Engle, Battle Mountain High School’s (BMHS) football coach created the tournament in 2005 and the inspiration has not only raised important funds over the years, but has also raised the awareness of young people about the U.S. military servicemen and women.

“I thought that it would be an honor to include our military in the fundraiser that we were planning,” said Engle.  “The Carson Station in particular is very appreciative and supportive of our efforts.  We’re expecting 60-65 military personnel.  It’s really amazing for the students who get to interact with them and we’re fortunate to have the support of Eagle Vail Golf Club,” exclaimed Engle.

Ben Welsh, PGA Head Golf Professional at the Eagle Vail Golf Club echoed Engle’s sentiments. “Eagle Vail Golf Club is extremely proud to host this particular fundraiser,” said Welsh. “It is a unique opportunity to welcome our military to our community and to introduce them to our course. They’re supporting our kids and we have the chance to give some rest and relaxation back to them,” added Welsh

Golfer and event sponsorships as well as contributions to the BMHS football team are still needed and greatly appreciated. The cost to sponsor a foursome is $600, or $150 to sponsor one person. For more information or to contribute or play in the tournament, please contact Pat Engle at 970-569-2275 or email pat@onesourcegear.com.

Regarded as one of the most beautiful golf experiences in the Vail Valley, Eagle Vail Golf Course offers full tournament services. It is central to all amenities and activities, including the public swimming pool, tennis courts and parks in the Eagle Vail neighborhood.
